U.S. Peer Review of Coal-Fired Generation April 22 - May 2, 2008

As part of the Asia Pacific Partnership, US based utility Alliant Energy hosted a Peer Review and technical information event April 28 to May 2, 2008 focused on Operational and Environmental Efficiencies for coal fired power plants. This program was built on the experiences and lessons learned from the April 2007 Japanese and February 2008 Indian Peer Reviews as well as the Hydroelectric Efficiency Project held in the US in August 2007.

During the US Peer Review event the “Coal Fired Power Plant Efficiency Improvement Checklist” developed during the Japanese Peer Review was used in a “hands-on” in-plant environment at two Alliant Energy coal fired generating facilities. More than 80 individuals (including plant staffs) participated in the actual peer review events. (A list of participants is attached). The review groups were divided into three subgroups for the actual review. Each group was charge with a specific section of the checklist to guide them in the review. These groups interfaced with knowledgeable plant personal who were made available to assist in the plant tours and to provide plant performance and operational information as well provide information on performance characteristics of specific equipment. The goals were to review, test, and fine tune the existing checklist as well as provide practice on implementation and identification of potential efficiency enhancements for the Alliant Energy plants. Also, the overall program provided a time for technical exchange of information.
